When your toilet won’t drain, it’s easy to feel stuck. Whether it’s too much toilet paper, a hidden obstruction, or buildup in your pipes, here’s how to clear it.
When your toilet won’t drain, it’s easy to feel stuck, literally. Whether it’s too much toilet paper, a hidden obstruction, or hard water buildup in your pipes, knowing how to clear a badly blocked toilet is a top priority.
A flange plunger (the kind with an extra rubber sleeve) seals against the toilet bowl far better than a flat sink plunger. Make sure there’s enough water to cover the rubber cup, then use slow, firm pushes followed by a sharp pull.
Squirt a generous amount of dish soap into the bowl, then pour in a bucket of hot (not boiling) water from waist height. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes. The soap lubricates the clog and the heat helps break it down.
A closet auger is designed to reach through the toilet trap without scratching the porcelain. Feed the cable in, crank it clockwise until you feel resistance, then work it back and forth to break up or retrieve the blockage.
If several fixtures are slow or the toilet gurgles when the washer drains, the problem may be your main sewer line or a blocked vent, not the toilet. That’s when it’s time to call a professional.
If the toilet keeps clogging, overflows, or other drains back up, call us. Repeated clogs in Arizona homes are often caused by scale buildup or root intrusion in the sewer line, which we can find with a camera inspection.
